A few years back, I was honored to be named "Humanitarian of the Arts" as part of the DFW Art Awards. I recall telling the artists in the audience that they were the first line of defense in protecting those who can not protect themselves. The First Amendment gives artists wide expression rights. The medium is not important. What is important is the message being conveyed. I concluded my remarks by saying an artist has an obligation not to produce art but to live their life to represent their work.
